Developing a Keyword Strategy
What's the word? With a strong SEO keyword strategy, you can attract potential customers to your website with content they actually want to read!

According to Forbes, 79 percent of all global desktop search traffic came from Google.

Using search engine optimization, you can optimize your website to attract more of this online traffic. For an effective SEO strategy, however, you need a strong keyword strategy first.

Our guide covers everything you need to know about SEO keyword research. With a well-planned strategy, you can increase online traffic and sales for an increase in business growth.

What is Keyword Research?

When people search for your product or service, your company should show up as an option. For this to work, however, you need website content that matches those searches.

Keyword research helps you determine what your visitors are searching for.

Then, you can create relevant website content based on those keywords.

To start, you can use a tool like Google’s Keyword Planner. This free online tool allows you to develop a list of potential keywords. Try using words that relate to your product or service.

Once you know what people are searching for, you can create content that covers those themes or topics.

Keyword planner even allows you to list potential keywords based on search popularity and cost.

Instead of going after super competitive keywords, you can choose popular keywords competitors haven’t used yet. This competitive analysis can give you a leg up on search engine results pages (SERPs).

Why is Keyword Research Important?

Now you can choose popular but inexpensive keywords for your content. That way, you can determine the most cost-effective keyword strategy for your business.

Without this step, you could end up wasting time and money better spent elsewhere.

This keyword research allows you to make the most of Google’s search algorithm for your keyword strategy. For an effective strategy, you need to consider search intent as well as keyword popularity.

An SEO keyword strategy also allows you to provide visitors with content they actually want. By creating content based on the customer’s search intent, you’re also showing customers you’re a helpful resource within your industry.

SEO allows your website to display and answer a customer’s questions.

Now you’re making it easier for customers to find what they’re looking for, too. Instead of leaving them to dig around searching and confused, you’re making sure your website is convenient and easy to use.

That ease of use improves user experience.

Google’s algorithm prioritizes websites with a strong user experience. These website rank higher on SERPs. If you’re ranked at the top of a SERPs, you’re also ranked above competitors.

That way, people find your website before anyone else’s.

Creating an SEO Keyword Strategy

Here are the four steps you need for an effective SEO keyword strategy.

Step 1: Talking Point Topics

To start, make a list of the topics you want to cover.

You can separate these by broad topics, then break them down for more focused blog articles.

For example, consider your services or products. You can make each of these services a broad topic. So if you have a shoe store, each shoe becomes a topic (heels, boots, tennis shoes, etc.).

Step 2: Turn Topics into Keywords

Once you have your topics, you can break them down!

So if “high heels” is a topic, keywords can include:

  • High heel styles
  • High heel stilettos
  • Different materials for high heels
  • Fall 2019 wedge heel styles

It’s important to make sure your customers are actually searching for these phrases. That’s where your research comes in.

Remember, this isn’t a final list of keyword phrases. Instead, it helps you generate a list of possibilities.

Step 3: Keyword Research

Now it’s time to get into research mode.

To make sure you’re developing a strong list of keywords, use tools such as Keyword Planner, Google Trends, or Google Analytics.

You can use these tools to determine what your visitors are already searching before visiting your website. That way, you can make sure those keywords are relevant to your ideal customers.

Step 4: Competitor Content

Use your list and run a Google search. What’s already ranking at the top of the SERPs?

This content can indicate what customers are looking for. Can you make this content better while offering your readers additional value?

If so, curate this content and make it your own. Don’t forget to implement your company’s brand, too. This can help you compete with other companies in your industry while offering your readers valuable information.

Step 5: Long- & Short-Tail Keywords

Now let’s develop your list of long-tail keywords.

Long-tail keywords are three or more words long. A mix of short- and long-tail keywords can help you balance your keyword strategy. That way, you’re covering a range of potential search terms.

If someone is looking for something specific, it will probably fall under a long-tail keyword.

If they’re looking for broader information, on the other hand, a short-tail keyword will cover their search.

Don’t forget to optimize your website speed, too! A faster website can improve user experience and boost your SEO. That way, you’re reaching a broader online audience and improving your ranking in one swift move!

Step 6: Narrow It Down

Head over to Google’s Keyword Planner to narrow down your list.

Check for keywords with a high search volume but low competition.

That way, you’re ranking for keywords customers are actually searching. Meanwhile, you’re not struggling to rank for keywords your competitors already dominate on SERPs.

Step 7: Keep It Up

Don’t forget to repeat the earlier steps. An effective keyword strategy changes in response to your customers.

If your readers are asking specific questions, your research will keep you informed. That way, you can adjust your keyword strategy and SEO content to respond to these searches.
