How to Calm Your Nerves
Get your interview on! With these tips, you can learn how to calm your nerves before an interview. Then head in with a clear head (and walk out with a new job).

Every job opening attracts an average of 250 resumes. However, only four to six of those people get an interview. If you recently snagged an interview, congratulations at beating those odds!

That’s half the battle. Now you have a chance to prepare for the big day.

If you’re feeling nervous, that’s perfectly normal. With these tips, you can learn how to calm your nerves.

1. Go for a Walk

Take a breath of (literal) fresh air. When trying to decide how to calm your nerves, start with a walk. Stepping outside can clear your mind right before the interview.

If it’s a phone interview, try a short jog.

A little running can help your body release healthy endorphins.

2. STOP

After your walk, STOP.

No, not literally. STOP stands for:

  • Stop what you’re doing to focus on your thoughts
  • Take a few deep breaths
  • Observe your body, mind, and emotions
  • Proceed with an intention to incorporate these observations into actions

Using this technique teaches you how to calm your nerves by slowing down.

Now you can banish fears and doubts before your interview.

3. Prepare for the Worst 

What’s your worst fear? Recognizing the worst-case scenario can help you prepare for it.

For example, you might feel worried about a difficult question. Make a list of possible interview questions. This allows you to prepare your answers, setting your fear aside.

Make sure to spring clean your social media accounts beforehand, too.

4. Make a Cheat Sheet

There are plenty of ways you can prepare for your interview. This prep will teach you how to get rid of anxiety before it strikes. Make a note with:

  • The hiring manager’s name
  • The building address (and directions)
  • The interview time
  • The points you want to make during your interview

Make a list of the questions you want to ask, too. Now you’re covered before you even walk into the room.

5. Make Plans

If you’re nervous, make plans for after your interview. Whether it’s treating yourself for ice cream or going out with friends, now you have something to look forward to.

6. Pep Talk It Out

Motivate yourself with a pep talk.

Shun your doubts by telling yourself what you need to hear. You’ve got this!

7. Call a Friend

An uplifting friend can give you encouragement, too. Call them before your interview before a motivational boost.

8. Prep a Playlist

What music do you listen to for energy, inspiration, or relaxation? Prepare a playlist before your interview and listen to it on the way there.

9. Smile

Smiling boosts your mood. In fact, grinning from ear to ear can elevate dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin in the body. Those feel-good chemicals are natural pain relievers. 

A smile is contagious, too. 

Walking into an interview with a smile on your face can put you and the interviewer at ease.
